Western and Southern Financial Group is a Fortune 500 company and worldwide life insurance industry leader with over $50 billion of life insurance inforce.  Gerber Life is a subsidiary offering protection for the entire family with over 3.6 million insurance policies inforce.  Gerber Life primarily distributes insurance products through direct marketing and agency methods and performs all  life insurance new business and underwriting operations on a custom software platform created by its Solutions Delivery Team.  The Solutions Delivery Team performs all work on the new platform including design, innovation, specification, testing, implementation and production support.


The Sr. Integration Engineer plays a key role for the organization through delivery of life insurance integration related solutions for Gerber Life.  This role continuously performs hands-on IBM Integration Broker and MQ integration related development while managing, inspecting and adapting the work of junior team members and 3rd parties to meet business objectives in an accurate and timely manner. 


The ideal candidate is a life insurance integration engineer by trade capable of implementing ESB (IBM Integration Bus) message flows for guaranteed interoperability between systems.   Extensive infrastructure, application, integration, data and security technology expertise along with a passion for hands-on innovation is essential.  A deep track record of success working with software delivery teams delivering hands-on life insurance integration solutions and production support while supervising and inspiring junior team members and external partners to do the same is mandatory.


Platform Development  & Support (75%):

  • Accountable for new delivery and production support of guaranteed data interexchange between all systems - specifically utilizes transformations and exception handling (i.e. message queuing, retries, notifications on failures, etc.) for 100% near real-time or same day batch data delivery to ensure disruption-free life insurance sales processing.
  • Personally meets insurance related software demands by delivering secure message flows (consuming 3rd party system endpoints and exposing endpoints for 3rd party consumption) by coding, debugging and testing programs using all technologies in place across the entire team. 
  • Enforces interface contract standards to reinforce all data security standards and to ultimately protect all system data in motion.
  • Defines integration patterns to seamlessly communicate with legacy mainframe systems and PCI based credit card payment solutions for real-time payment settlement and batch based settlements. 
  • Accountable for protecting all integration work delivered utilizing lean test automation as a means of platform regression defense and manual acceptance testing reduction for each subsequent improvement iteration.
  • Creates integration delivery standards to reinforce all data security standards, ensures peer review, and consistently inspects and adapts.
  • Optimizes continuous integration and applies required infrastructure, technologies and techniques for rapidly introducing software changes to the user base.
  • Supports configuration and change management processes with ongoing review/validation of product releases to support continuous improvement.
  • Employs quantitative methods for measuring defects and resolution velocity and sets targets for individuals and the team."

Software Delivery Leadership (25%):

  • Coordinates with external business teams to align on project goals and to ensure deliverables meet intended business objectives.
  • Leads by example working with delivery and acceptance teams to aid in positioning upcoming release scope.  Collaborates with release managers in preparation for planned and unplanned releases making use of code scan and test automation results along the way.
  • Ensures software development is positioned and documented in a manner conducive to swift onboarding and exiting of external resource supply in order to meet the expanding and contracting business demands of the organization.


  • 7+ years of life insurance industry experience - must be a life insurance subject matter and must have intimate knowledge of life insurance industry software and service offerings and have strong market / situational awareness & decision making abilities.
  • 7+ years of direct marketing experience (life insurance related preferred)  - must have deep customer facing big systems, custom software delivery experience.
  • 5+ years of life insurance back-office solution delivery related experience.
  • 7+ years of hands on "integration" development experience - must have an Agile mindset and passion for innovation, agile delivery methods and continuous integration.
  • 5+ years experience with agile delivery frameworks including Scrum, LeSS, Lean, XP, Kanban, FDD, BDD and supporting tools (Cucumber, JIRA).
  • 5+ years experience with hybrid software delivery experience (utilizing Waterfall to work with Sr. Leadership Teams in parallel with Agile Teams on a daily basis).
  • Strong leadership, exceptional executive-level communication skills (written / oral) and ability to communicate complex technical information to all stakeholders, including those who do not have a technical background.
  • Enterprise systems thinking - specifically the ability to see how individual systems and applications parts interact with the enterprise (big picture thinking).  Must be proficient in the techniques that go into producing designs of complex systems, including requirements discovery and analysis, formulation of solution context, identification of solution alternatives and their assessment, technology selection, and design configuration.
  • 3 years minimum proven success working in a remote capacity.
  • Deep broad experience utilizing open source software, libraries and frameworks with information systems security practices and secure by design principles.
  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize and educate software delivery teams to make decisions in a timely manner to keep projects on track.  Knowledge of financial modeling as it pertains to IT investment, IT governance and operations.
  • Must be a Team player able to work effectively at all levels of an organization with the ability to influence others to move toward consensus.  Must be highly reliable, trustworthy, honest, and commitment oriented
  • Disciplined, consistent use of recognized design methods such as the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) and others to deploy parts of methods appropriate to the situation.

Educational Requirements:

  • M.S. Computer Science

Computer Skills and Knowledge of Hardware & Software required:

  • Determines enterprise integration patterns and delivers and inspects IBM ESQL, Java based Message flow development related work performed in an ESB centric architecture (knowledge of IBM Integration Broker, MQ, Kafka, ESB Mule) including RESTful API construction and  consumption and complex transformations for handling  formats like SOAP, XML, HTML, REST, JSON, XSLT, DFDL, CSV, Cobol copybook, Fixed Length etc.
  • Extenisive knowlede in MQ and ability to make use of MQ capabilities in the Message flow development to ensure assured delivery,consistency, retry and zero data loss.
  • Hands on  experience on handling different kinds of batch/realtime interfaces and securing the messages via different encryption mechanism for data at motion and and rest.
  • Broad experience delivering solutions utilizing various flavors of web servers including Microsoft IIS Web Server, Jetty and WebSphere Application Server.
  • Utilizes, influences the design of and inspects work performed on relational databases including MS SQL Server and My SQL and non-relational databases including Redis, Cassandra or Hbase, MongoDB or Couchbase and ElasticSearch.
  • Influences the design of and inspects work performed in J2EE, JMS, JSP / Servlets, SQL, PL/SQL, Core Java, HTML, XML, JSON, JavaScript, JQuery, Spring MVC, Material Design, sprite, CSS
  • Rick exposure to Atlassian Jira or similar tools, SCM including SVN and GIT, build tools including Ant, Maven and Gradle, deployment tools including Jenkins & GIT and overall CI / CD tools to optimize productivity and the release management function.
  • Guides re-platforming efforts based on working knowledge of cloud.

Position Demands:

  • Self-disciplined professional for meaningful remote contribution throughout the day.  Remote position demands constant management of personal calendar, availability status and multi-media messages (email, IM voice) and must remain accessible throughout the day at all times. 
  • Long hours spent in front of a PC participating in audio / video web meetings to collaborate with the Solutions Delivery Team and all members of the organization.
  • Deployment and application production support maintenance during nights and weekends is required
  • Must be available 24 x 7 for Level II application production support emergencies.
  • Quarterly on-site travel to work in offices located in White Plains, NY (Gerber Life HQ), Fremont MI (Gerber Life Operations) and Cincinnati, OH (WSFG HW).
