Overview

Summary of Responsibilities:

Administers, supports and maintains the relational database environment on the client-server platform. Provides technical expertise to application teams in designing, implementing and troubleshooting online and batch applications and overnight processing. Works under minimal supervision and is responsible to make an established range of decisions, escalates to manager when necessary and updates manager on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

Position Responsibilities:

  • Designs, tests, implements, maintains and supports relational databases in a multiple database, high-availability environment.

  • Works with the application teams to develop, test, install and maintain in-house and third-party applications that are database dependent.

  • Reviews, monitors and manages database system performance, capacity, tuning and maintenance; takes proactive steps to identify and optimize areas that need attention.

  • Plans, coordinates and implements database security measures to protect and ensure the security and integrity of Company data.

  • Develops recommendations for corporate database standards, including appropriate patch levels and configuration settings.

  • Keeps current with the latest RDBMS technology and toolset patches, security advisements and alerts and code upgrades; identifies, defines and executes the necessary procedures to implement upgrades in all environments.

  • Defines and implements routine maintenance procedures and backup and recovery plans.

  • Optimizes and validates SQL and PL/SQL with developers.

  • Works with vendors to understand the system requirements during the installation of third-party software applications. Cite examples of experience with reviewing and implementing third-party software.

  • Creates and maintains administration procedural documentation.

  • Prepares and presents project status reports for management.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

  • Proven experience implementing, maintaining (monitoring and tuning) and administering development, test and production relational databases in a multi-database high-availability environment. Cite examples of experiences successfully administering and maintaining a high-availability RDBMS environment.

  • Proven strong analytical skills, including demonstrated experience identifying and quantifying problems and providing effective resolutions. Must be able to cite examples of good decision-making skills when dealing with multiple alternatives.

  • Proven knowledge of disaster recovery processes and concepts. Cite examples of standard policies in the disaster recovery process.

  • Extensive experience in database system design and analysis, including physical and logical entity relationship data modeling. Cite examples of data modeling experiences in both OLAP and OLTP systems.

  • Proven experience in writing stored procedures and user scripts.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. Cite examples of successfully organizing and effectively completing projects on time where given little or no direction.

  • Demonstrated experience working effectively within a team. Must provide examples of motivating co-workers in difficult situations.

  • Possesses and displays excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.

  • Demonstrated experience setting professional goals and successfully implementing and achieving those goals.

  • Proven experience handling multiple duties and completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis. Cite examples of project management experience in planning, executing and maintaining a project from start to finish.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining a calm and professional demeanor when handling critical or demanding situations.

  • Must provide examples of working under multiple deadlines and minimal supervision. Must cite examples of successfully organizing and effectively completing projects where given little or no direction.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate selection criteria experience.

Computer skills and knowledge of hardware & software required:

  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

  • Proficient in Oracle RDBMS and SQL Server RDBMS.

  • Working knowledge of AIX and Windows-based Operating Systems including scripts and task scheduling.

  • Working knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL.

Certifications & licenses (i.e. Series 6 & 63, CPA, etc.):

  • None required.

Position Demands:

  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects and to handle problems off-hours as required, including returning to work if necessary.

  • On-call rotation via pager to support the database systems and applications 24 hours per day/7 days per week/
    365 days per year.
