Overview

This role is critical for accelerating marketing, sales and servicing gains and the company’s industry leading position.  The ideal candidate is an industry-proven, hands-on, large-scale, senior leader of business intelligence and data analytics by trade specializing in curating and converting disparate, complex life insurance data sets into decision-making business intelligence and analytics.

Responsibilities

Strategic: 

  • Leads a team of 2-3 business intelligence and data analytics engineers that own 100% of the following capabilities:
    1. Business intelligence and data analytics technologies and the continuous advancement of their capabilities for the company.  Owns execution of the plan and roadmap for consolidation and migration of business intelligence assets and technologies and re-factoring for BI asset consolidation.  Individually satiates all new BI work demand while replacing Cognos with Microsoft Power BI to deliver interactive reports, cubes, real-time dashboards and scorecards (forecast and actuals.  Publishes dimensional data that business users can utilize for accurate business intelligence self-authoring.
    2. Individually contributes to the creation of a new data analytics capability (the accurate use of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive data analytics) for the organization by assisting with the introduction of new people, process and technologies.
    3. Partners with peer teams within the Application Development and Solutions Delivery (ADSD) department to convey the needs for data warehouse expansion for the purpose of advancing business intelligence and analytics capabilities for the company (data warehouse dimensionality with levels of aggregation and related metrics and analytics which serves as the trusted single vault of truth for the enterprise). 
  • The individual in this role grows the ADSD agile and analytical mindset and perpetuates the ADSD "can-do" spirit with existing employees and contractors while selectively recruiting and hiring like-minded new engineers to do the same. 

Strategic Execution: 

  • Individually manages product and sprint backlogs as needed to deliver data modifications. Effectively adapts people, process and technology to maximize value for the company within departmental and project budgets.
  • Individually performs hands-on discovery, data modeling, and development to deliver value through data engineering and encourages others to do the same by example.
  • Responsible for assigning work to all direct and indirect reports to meet all new data modifications related work demand. 
  • Responsible for estimating new work with peers.

Tactical Execution:

  • Steers teams using all people, process and technology advantages across the company.
  • Ensures teams and individually adheres to all designs, policies, procedures and standards for data security and regulatory compliance.
  • Hands-on business intelligence and data analytics engineering including the delivery of an automated deployment pipeline with quality control across all Gerber Life custom and proprietary technologies using all people, process and technology advantages across the enterprise.

Qualifications

 
  • Typically requires at least 7 years of business intelligence and data analytics change management experience with at least 5 years in a leadership setting with executive level reporting experience.
  • Typically requires 5 years of large-scale life insurance business intelligence and data analytics engineering experience.
  • Typically requires 5 years collaborating with and leading a team of business intelligence and data analytics engineers utilizing Scrum and supporting tools (JIRA). 
  • Must have the ability to simplify large-scale business intelligence and data analytics related needs to minimize total cost of ownership (ensuing overhead).
  • Must have an agile mindset and insatiable passion for innovation, agile delivery methods and continuous integration.
  • Must be an autonomous team player able to lead effectively while solidifying working relationships at all levels of the organization.

Work Setting:

  • This position works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings. 
  • Position requires substantial movement of wrist, hands and fingers for continuous computer work.

Educational Requirements:

  • M.S. Computer Science or Management Information Systems

  • ETL:  SSIS, IBM DataStage, Cognos DataManager
  • Job Scheduler: Control-M
  • BI: Microsoft Power BI, Cognos, Tableau
  • Analytics: Python, R, SAS, SPSS
  • DB: SQL Server, DB2, (SQL), Mainframe IMS/VSAM, In-Memory DB, NoSQL

  • Cloud: Azure Analytics Services, Google Cloud Smart Analytics

  • N/A

Position Demands:

  • Quarterly on-site travel to work in offices located in White Plains, NY (Gerber Life HQ), Fremont MI (Gerber Life Operations) and / or Cincinnati, OH (Western and Southern Financial Group HQ).
  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects and off-hour support.
