Overview

Summary of Responsibilities:

Performs medical underwriting/medical risk analysis, establishes underwriting standards, and reads EKG's for Western & Southern and Columbus Life New Business. Acts as a consultant for the Benefits Department, including employee health and disability coverage. Provides limited patient care, including injuries, in the Health Services Department. Additionally, consults with Claims Administration as needed.

Responsibilities

Position Responsibilities:

  • Underwrites large and complex life insurance applications for insurance amounts up to several million dollars.

  • Educates underwriters, principally using case-by-case review and classroom presentations.

  • Consults with Claims Administration on medical criteria.

  • Provides on-site occupational medicine by providing patient care in Health Services.

  • Consults on selected employee health insurance cases and employee disability cases with the Managed Care Unit (MCU) nurses, corporate nurse and plan administrator.

  • Establishes CLU database for underwriting trending and statistics.

  • Continues medical education as required by Ohio Medical Board for medical licensure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Selection Criteria:

  • Must demonstrate broad knowledge of medical conditions and related morbidity.

  • Proven ability to assess health conditions based on limited information.

  • Possesses and displays excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.

  • Demonstrated experience effectively influencing a group to a recommended course of action.

  • Proven experience handling multiple duties and completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis. Cite examples of project management experience in planning, executing and maintaining a project from start to finish.

  • Maintains professional liability insurance.

Educational Requirements:

  • M.D. or D.O. from accredited college or university.

Computer skills and knowledge of hardware & software required:

  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

Certifications & licenses (i.e. Series 6 & 63, CPA, etc.):

  • State of Ohio medical license.

Position Demands:

  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects.
