Overview

Western & Southern’s complete Tax Function is currently outsourced to external contractors. This position will manage those contractors on a day-to-day basis in order to perform the following tasks: managing the Enterprise’s income, premium and sales tax compliance and reporting; state and local tax audits; tax cash-flow planning and projections; and research on various assignments received from Management.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, reviews and  approves all state and local returns for Western & Southern Financial Group to include all life and non-life subsidiaries, Employee Benefit Plans and tax-exempt entities to include the State Premium, Income/Franchise and Sales and Use Tax Returns, all non-life State Income/Franchise and Property Tax Returns.
  • Manages compliance with all state and local tax audits for the Enterprise.
  • Ensures implementation of changes in tax legislation as it impacts the Company’s tax, operations and products.
  • Reviews and approves all related tax payments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Substantial experience preparing and managing the preparation of state and local tax returns for C-Corporations, partnerships, large and small corporations, consolidated groups, etc., in a corporate tax or public accounting firm. Federal tax return experience desired.
  • Demonstrated thorough in-depth understanding of the functions of GAAP, statutory and income tax accounting, the underlying body of concepts that constitute accounting theory and the application of those concepts to accounting problems and situations.  Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of key elements of financial statements and reports, such as balance sheets, income statements and cash-flow statements.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in the explanation of detailed and complicated tax issues, summaries and positions to non-tax professionals in a clear, focused and concise manner.  Must be able to provide samples of written tax research and position statements.
  • Proven experience coordinating multiple projects/assignments simultaneously, and completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis.  Must demonstrate strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.  Expected to cite examples of organization and time management methods used to manage or prioritize workload demands.  Must demonstrate project management experience in planning, executing and maintaining a project from start to finish.
  • Demonstrated strong presentation skills with proven experience in the presentation of topics to audiences with varying degrees of knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and use of multiple research resources. 
  • Proven experience working independently where independent decision-making and initiative were demonstrated.  Must be able to cite examples of making timely decisions that incorporated innovative problem resolution to tax issues that had a significant impact on the business objectives of a company.
  • Proven experience leading and motivating teams.  Must possess a high level of proficiency in the ability to provide direction, coaching and effective feedback to team members. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
