Overview

Working independently, prepares state and local tax compliance for various life and non-life corporate and joint venture entities. Assists in tax research that may arise during tax compliance preparation (e.g., due date and estimate requirements), and prepares and assembles state, county, municipal and other miscellaneous state and local taxes. Prepares supplemental schedules that are required for the annual statement. Works with minimal supervision and is responsible for making an established range of decisions, escalating to management when necessary and updating management on a regular basis.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Prepares in an accurate and timely manner the following required tax documents: Quarterly and annual State Premium Taxes for Western & Southern Life Insurance Company (WSLIC), Western & Southern Life Assurance Company (WSLAC), Columbus Life Insurance Company (CLIC), Lafayette Life Insurance, Integrity Life Insurance Company and National Integrity Life Insurance Company. State Income/Franchise Taxes, State Tangible and Intangible Personal Property Taxes, Municipal and Occupational License Taxes, and other miscellaneous state and local taxes and assessments for The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company and subsidiaries. Property returns and annual reports for various joint ventures of Western & Southern and subsidiaries and partnerships. Property valuations and payments for Western & Southern Life district offices. Ohio use tax return for the Enterprise.
  • Maintains “under reporter” listing as notified per IRS. Sends letters to policyholders to inform of underreporting status.
  • Calculates taxable portion on non-routine annuity payments that cannot be done by systems based on research to determine the proper tax law application.
  • Creates annual reports of premium taxes paid and premium tax rates for Accounting and Actuarial departments, respectively. Creates other relevant reports as needed or requested.
  • Receives correspondence (i.e., phone calls, written inquiries) from state and local revenue departments regarding premium, property, income and use tax returns filed, and coordinates timely responses.
  • Prepares manual Forms 1099 and 5498 corrections for policyholders and directors.
  • Stays current on state premium tax legislative changes.
  • Provides backup support to Executive Assistant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Proven experience coordinating multiple projects assignments simultaneously, and completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis. Must demonstrate strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills. Expected to cite examples of organization and time management methods used to manage or prioritize workload demands. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining a calm and professional demeanor when handling stressful situations. (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and local tax compliance for corporate entities. Proven experience in the position of Tax Compliance Specialist, having demonstrated a thorough knowledge and mastery of the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to pull out key elements of financial statements and reports, such as balance sheets, income statements and cash-flow statements for use in completing and filing tax documents.
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated strong mathematical aptitude.
  • Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Proficient in the use of various tax software packages.
  • High School Diploma Degree (Required)

Work Setting/Position Demands:

  • This position works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings. Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects.
