Overview

Directs and manages outsourced tax compliance process in determining Western & Southern Financial Group's income tax liability for financial statement and legal compliance purposes, primarily federal tax. Responsibilities also include the timely completion and filing of all federal tax returns for W&SFG, controlled partnerships and tax-exempt entities. Directs the implementation of changes in tax legislation as they impact the Enterprise's tax and operations; federal, audits; tax cash flow planning and projections; and research on various issues received from the Vice President, Tax, or that arise in the compliance process. Provides assistance on accounting and tax planning for corporate joint ventures, acquisitions, formations, dispositions and liquidations.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Directs, and as appropriate, reviews and approves the GAAP and statutory tax provisions. Stays current on GAAP and statutory accounting pronouncements so as to anticipate appropriate actions by the Enterprise as they affect our tax positions. Represents the Tax Vice President at discussions of accounting issues affecting W&SFG including joint meetings with Enterprise Accounting, Actuarial Operations and PWC.
  • Directs, and as appropriate, reviews and approves all federal tax returns for the entire Western & Southern Financial Group. This responsibility includes all life insurance and non-life insurance subsidiaries, controlled partnerships and tax-exempt entities.
  • Manages, trains and develops WS and PWC teams, overseeing the quality, accuracy and timeliness of all work. Anticipates impact of changes in accounting rules and regulations, and develops strategies to minimize impact on tax expense.
  • Directs compliance with all federal tax audits for the Enterprise (and state audits as needed).
  • Works with Tax Vice President in all tax planning for corporate joint ventures, acquisitions, formations, dispositions and liquidations, and challenges the efficacy of all tax advice so as to determine the need for reserves for tax exposures.
  • Challenges the current direction of the tax compliance and financial reporting effort, and suggests changes as needed. Works with PWC to ensure implementation of changes in tax legislation as it impacts the Enterprise's tax and operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree In Accounting - Required
  • Master's degree in Tax or Juris Doctor - Preferred
  • Proven experience directing, and managing the preparation of federal returns for C-Corporations, partnerships, consolidated groups, etc., in a corporate tax or public accounting firm. Experience with managing a Co-Sourced engagement a plus. - Required
  • Proven experience coordinating multiple projects/assignments simultaneously, and completing assigned tasks accurately and on a timely basis. Must demonstrate strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills. Expected to cite examples of organization and time management methods used to manage or prioritize workload demands. Must demonstrate project management experience in planning, executing and maintaining a project from start to finish. - Required
  • Must possess and have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in ability to provide direction, coaching and effective feedback to team members either internal or external. - Required
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding of the functions of GAAP, statutory and federal income tax accounting, the underlying body of concepts that constitute accounting theory and the application of those concepts to accounting problems and situations. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of key elements of financial statements and reports, such as balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. - Required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of corporate and partnership taxation including federal tax provisions, tax considerations in corporate formations, distributions, redemptions, liquidations, corporate reorganizations, acquisitions and divisions, penalty provisions, consolidated return provisions and consideration of the alternatives related to the sales and purchases of corporate businesses. - Required
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven experience in the explanation of detailed and complicated tax issues, summaries and positions to non-tax professionals in a clear, understandable, focused and concise manner. - Required
  • Proven strong presentation skills with demonstrated experience in presentation of topics to audiences with varying degrees of knowledge and experience. - Required
  • Proven in-depth knowledge and use of multiple research resources. - Required
  • Proven examples of timely decisions that incorporated innovative problem resolution to tax issues that had significant impact on the business objectives of a company. - Required
  • Proficient in the use of various tax software packages. - Required
  • Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications. - Required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Upon Hire - Preferred

Work Setting/Position Demands:

  • Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings.
  • Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information to customers and associates on a regular basis.
  • Requires visual acuity to read and interpret a variety of correspondence, procedures, reports and forms via paper and electronic documents, visual inspection involving small defects; small parts, and/or operation of machinery (including inspection); using measurement devices continuously. Visual acuity is required to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
  • Requires the ability to prepare written correspondence, reports and forms using prescribed formats and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style on a regular basis.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Performs substantial movement of wrists, hands, and fingers for continuous computer work.
  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects/events.
