Overview

Evaluates and classifies life, accident and critical illness insurance applications. Reviews applications, medical exams, laboratory results and other underwriting information in order to identify low-risk applicants, and expedites the approval of those applications. Works with a mentor underwriter to establish appropriate underwriting actions to fully evaluate complex risks. Answers questions concerning application status and other inquiries on behalf of the underwriter. Verbally discusses cases with sales associates and applicants, which may involve explaining the reason the company took adverse action on an application and attempting to diminish any negative reaction by the applicant. Works with company physicians to develop a strong knowledge of human physiology in order to glean the necessary information from the data collected. Works with an underwriting mentor to develop the skills necessary to assess substandard risks and builds experience reviewing medical records. In addition, works to build a high level of knowledge of other technical aspects of the underwriting process which include: financial needs, insurable interests, avocations and occupations along with a comprehensive knowledge of the Company's products and procedures.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Identifies pertinent risk factors and takes appropriate actions on life insurance applications.
  • Reviews laboratory results, medical exams and other incoming underwriting requirements to determine an applicant's insurability.
  • Reviews applications for completeness.
  • Requests appropriate underwriting requirements.
  • Manages producer requests and communicates directly with producers to gather needed information.
  • Conducts follow-up research on outstanding requirements and refers to the underwriter when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • College degree, minimum 4 years of relevant life insurance work experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience. - Required
  • LOMA 280 and 290 preferred. Must be completed within one year of selection. - Preferred
  • Proven experience working in a customer-oriented field and effectively articulating information to clients in a patient and understanding manner while managing multiple tasks/issues involving clients. - Required
  • Must provide examples from working experience of going beyond the call of duty to assist team members. Works independently. - Required
  • Proven strong analytical skills, including demonstrated experience identifying and quantifying problems and providing effective resolutions.
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused and concise manner.
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Work Setting/Position Demands:

  • Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings.
  • Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information to customers and associates on a regular basis.
  • Requires visual acuity to read and interpret a variety of correspondence, procedures, reports and forms via paper and electronic documents, visual inspection involving small defects; small parts, and/or operation of machinery (including inspection); using measurement devices continuously. Visual acuity is required to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
  • Requires the ability to prepare written correspondence, reports and forms using prescribed formats and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style on a regular basis.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Performs substantial movement of wrists, hands, and fingers for continuous computer work.
  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects/events.
